Iran’s Assembly of Experts urges officials to follow Mojtaba Khamenei, rejects US deal

Iran’s Assembly of Experts has called on all officials to fully adhere to the positions and directives attributed to the country’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stressing that trust in the United States or hopes of reaching an agreement with Washington are "futile."

In a statement issued on Monday, the Assembly’s leadership described messages attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei as "guiding messages," saying his views should serve as a "beacon" for officials across state institutions. The statement emphasized that any action to pursue Iran’s rights must be carried out within the framework of his opinions and directives.

The statement accused the United States of "repeatedly violating the memorandum of understanding," insisting that adherence to the Supreme Leader’s guidance is both a "rational and religious duty," and described it as "the sole axis of unity."

The statement comes as US President Donald Trump affirms ongoing negotiations with Iran. The Assembly’s leadership said that trust in the US government is "nothing but a mirage," and that "hopes for understanding or agreement with this arrogant regime will lead nowhere," according to the statement.

The statement was issued amid ongoing disputes within Iran’s political arena since the signing of the memorandum with Washington. In July 2026, several Assembly members published an open letter setting out conditions, some of which conflicted with the terms of the bilateral memorandum.

Pressure on the negotiating team has increased following the publication of a letter attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei, which stated that the Supreme Leader "in principle, held a different view" regarding the agreement with Washington.
