Trump says Saudi crown prince prevented US strike on Iran, pushed for deal

Former US President Donald Trump revealed that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also prime minister, preferred reaching an agreement with Iran rather than resorting to military action, stressing that the Saudi stance helped prevent a US attack that was being prepared against Tehran.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his return to Washington, Trump said Saudi Arabia believed a deal with Iran was within reach and warned that any attack could lead to unpredictable consequences, at a time when Washington was preparing what he described as "the largest strike against Iran since World War II."

The former president indicated that negotiations between Washington and Tehran would begin Monday afternoon, initially focusing on reaching an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz before moving on to discuss Iran's nuclear program.

Trump did not disclose the location of the talks, the composition of the delegations, or whether the negotiations would be direct or indirect, but expressed hope they would lead to an agreement that would prevent large-scale casualties and avert a major attack.
