Indian opposition lawmakers protest near PM’s residence over student rights

Political tensions escalated in New Delhi after police intervened in recent student protests, according to udaipurkiran.com.

Members of the Congress Party, led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, staged a demonstration near the prime minister’s residence to show solidarity with students and call for the protection of their rights.

Congress leaders accused police of using batons and tear gas during the student protests, resulting in injuries and hospitalizations. MP Ranjeet Ranjan stated that "a large number of students suffered serious injuries, with some sustaining fractures," and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.

MP Rajeev Shukla said the party is raising its voice against what he described as "violations" against students, stressing that the government must take their demands seriously. Rajya Sabha member Praveen Chakravarty called for a full parliamentary debate on the issue, describing the future of youth as a fundamental national concern.

Other parties’ reactions and calls for dialogue

BJD lawmakers expressed concern over the events at the Jantar Mantar protests. MP Sulata Deo shared a video showing force used against female students and called for more sensitive handling of demonstrators. MP Santroop Mishra said his party "is saddened by the police’s treatment of students" and urged for serious dialogue with protesters.

Similarly, Aam Aadmi Party leaders criticized the central government, accusing it of trying to silence students and youth, and demanded serious discussion on education issues and student demands. Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka emphasized the importance of understanding the concerns and aspirations of the new generation, saying it is every government’s responsibility to listen to young people.

India’s opposition continues to call for parliamentary debates on student conditions and rights, with broad engagement from various parties over the right to peaceful protest and education issues.
