US Senate blocks war powers measure, giving Trump leeway on Iran

The US Senate on Thursday blocked a Democrat-sponsored resolution aimed at halting military action against Iran unless Congress authorizes such operations.

The move reflects growing concern in Congress, including among some Republican allies of President Donald Trump, over the prospect of conflict with Iran.

Senators voted 49 to 47 against advancing the war powers resolution.

Earlier, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives had passed legislation on Thursday directing President Trump to halt any US military action against Iran.

The House vote was 214 to 208 in favor of the war powers measure, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support.

The resolution, introduced by Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, directs Trump to "end the use of US armed forces in hostilities" against Iran unless Congress authorizes it.
