Iraq closes Al-Tayeb border area with Iran after drone attack suspicions

Iraqi authorities have closed the Al-Tayeb border area with Iran after discovering sites used to launch drones, according to two Iraqi military sources cited by Reuters.

The move comes hours after the Iraqi government reiterated its rejection of any attack that threatens Saudi Arabia's security or harms bilateral relations, announcing an urgent investigation into the circumstances of the attacks and the parties responsible.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani affirmed that his government "will not tolerate any activity that endangers Iraq or its relations with friendly countries," as Baghdad seeks to contain the fallout from Iraqi territory being used to launch attacks on the Kingdom.

Baghdad has also agreed to an Iranian request for a joint investigation into the drone launch platforms found near the two countries' border.

On Saturday, Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi approved the Iranian side's request for a joint investigation into the discovery of drone launch platforms near the Iraqi-Iranian border, according to a statement from the Iraqi government.

Regarding border measures, the Iraqi Border Ports Authority confirmed that steps taken at several crossings with Iran are temporary, aimed at reorganizing operations, raising readiness, and improving inspection and control mechanisms.

In a statement on Saturday evening, the authority stressed that cross-border movement with Iran has not stopped, noting that the Zurbatiyah and Al-Munthiriya crossings are operating around the clock, with high volumes of passenger and trade traffic.

The authority explained that these measures coincide with a periodic review of the border crossings' operational and technical needs, in coordination with all relevant agencies, to enhance border security while maintaining smooth trade and travel flows.

It added that work is underway to complete organizational and rehabilitation requirements at other crossings, paving the way for their reopening once the necessary procedures are finalized to ensure maximum order, control, and efficiency.
