Iran prolonging talks to stall and apply pressure, says analyst

Political analyst Saeed Al-Qadi said that Iran's unjustified escalation and its creation of illogical pretexts for this escalation indicate a lack of unified decision-making within Iran.

Speaking in a phone interview with Al-Ikhbariya Radio, Al-Qadi added that recent developments confirm there is no single authority in Iran, and that the country's ruler is not its president. He said Iran is engaging in negotiations merely to waste time and prolong the crisis.

He continued that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps holds the real power, controlling both war and peace. The signs of escalation, he said, show that Iran is less interested in peace than in exerting pressure to gain concessions—a negotiating tactic it has used since 1979.

It is noteworthy that since the early days of military confrontations against it, Iran has escalated operations against targets in neighboring countries, claiming these are American targets, while in reality striking energy facilities and power stations.

Iran has also sparked a dispute over the interpretation of Article 5 of the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States, alleging that it grants Iran the right to make "arrangements" for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has begun targeting vessels in the strait, justifying its actions by claiming these ships did not obtain Tehran's permission to transit.
