No fatalities in ammunition depot blast in southern Aleppo, Syrian authorities say

Syrian authorities confirmed on Monday that no fatalities occurred following an explosion at an army ammunition depot in the Al-Eis area of southern Aleppo province, stating that injuries were limited to minor cases only.

Aleppo Governor Azzam Al-Gharib said teams from the defense and emergency ministries have been working at the site since early morning, proceeding gradually and cautiously due to the risk of further hazards or explosions, to ensure everyone's safety.

Al-Gharib added that specialized teams are surveying nearby villages, residences, and the area surrounding the site to ensure there are no civilian injuries and to address any objects or remnants that could pose a danger.

Investigation launched into cause of explosion

The Syrian Ministry of Defense has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the explosions inside the weapons depot in Aleppo province, confirming that relevant authorities are working to clarify the circumstances and reasons behind the incident.

The ministry's initial statement did not provide further details about the types of weapons stored or the extent of the damage, stressing that the results of the investigation will be announced once complete.

Security measures and warnings to residents

Authorities urged residents to stay away from the site, to immediately report any suspicious or unfamiliar objects without touching them, and to leave their handling to specialists. Officials confirmed that field monitoring will continue until all safety procedures are completed and residents' safety is assured.

Several explosions were reportedly heard in areas west and north of Aleppo city, with heavy fire and smoke rising after the incident.

The Syrian Civil Defense at the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management reported that one civilian was injured by shrapnel in an initial tally, while two others suffered temporary breathing difficulties, and another was hurt in a traffic accident while trying to leave the area. The teams also evacuated three families from the vicinity.

Authorities imposed a security cordon around the area, restricting traffic and access to the explosion site.

Context of previous incidents

Syrian authorities recently reported the deaths of 11 soldiers in an unexplained blast at a military warehouse in the Ayash area west of Deir Ezzor. On September 9, a temporary weapons and war remnants storage site near Sarmada in Idlib province exploded, killing 14 people and injuring 11. Earlier that month, five people were killed in Idlib when a vehicle loaded with ammunition exploded.
