A 49-year-old Brazilian man sold all his personal belongings to fund a trip to Belo Horizonte in southeastern Brazil, hoping to meet a woman he believed was the love of his life—only to discover she was an artificial intelligence creation.

Edimar Martins, a construction worker, told television reporters he first connected with a social media account named 'Jessica Oliveira' in 2020, never suspecting that the woman he grew attached to was not real. Detailing the extent of his sacrifice for the journey, Martins told the New York Post: "I sold all my things."

Martins arrived on October 11 in Belo Horizonte, more than 1,200 miles from his home in Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, but was unable to find his supposed girlfriend.

The persona 'Jessica Oliveira' appeared in videos on the TikTok account @JessicaFazendeira, which has around 300,000 followers, presenting herself as a woman seeking a partner to join her on her farm, promising to cover all his expenses. In one now-deleted video, the AI-generated character said: "I really want to support you financially, I want you to come to my farm and never have to work again for the rest of your life."

After Martins' story spread, the person behind the account posted a video on Wednesday admitting the character was virtual and created using artificial intelligence, denying any direct contact with Martins.

In the video, the character stated: "I'm here to clarify something for everyone: I am AI-generated. I have never spoken directly to anyone using this account, and the goal was to generate engagement in preparation for selling the account." The creator added: "I never spoke directly with anyone, and I certainly never asked anyone to go to Belo Horizonte. I was surprised by what happened."

Martins is currently staying with a relative after returning from the trip that cost him all his possessions, but he remains hopeful of finding a real-life partner. He said he plans to return to Belo Horizonte in search of a woman he can settle down with, adding: "I didn't find her, but I will find another woman, and she will be in the same place I went to, and I will go again."

The use of artificial intelligence to create realistic personas presented as real people is on the rise, raising concerns about the risks such technology poses to relationships formed through social media platforms.
