Iraqi MP sentenced to 7 years in major corruption case

Iraq's Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has sentenced parliament member Baha Al-Nouri, whose full name is Baha Al-Din Noor Mohammed Hussein, to seven years in prison.

The court based its ruling on his conviction for illicit enrichment, ordering him to repay more than 5.8 billion Iraqi dinars and $10.9 million, in addition to a fine equal to the value of the illicit gains.

The court also sentenced Al-Nouri to three years in prison for concealing information on his financial disclosure form, applying the harsher penalty, and upheld the seizure of his movable and immovable assets.

Al-Nouri was detained as part of a wide-ranging security and judicial campaign that has seen the arrest of more than 17 officials, mostly parliamentarians, over cases involving corruption, funding of armed groups, Iranian oil, and dollar smuggling.
