Arab Parliament condemns Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over occupied Golan

The Arab Parliament has strongly condemned Colombia’s announcement recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, describing the move as a blatant violation of international law, a disregard for international legitimacy, and an attempt to provide political cover for an illegal reality imposed by force.

In an official statement, Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al-Yamahi reaffirmed the parliament’s firm position that the Golan Heights is Syrian Arab land under occupation, and that any unilateral declaration by a state cannot alter its legal status or affect the rights of the Syrian Arab Republic. He stressed that occupation cannot serve as a basis for acquiring sovereignty or establishing legal rights over land seized by force.

The Arab Parliament called on the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse its position, urging it to adhere to international law and relevant United Nations resolutions. The parliament warned of the dangers of such stances and the precedent they may set in dealing with occupied territories, which could negatively impact efforts to achieve peace, security, and stability in the region.

The Arab Parliament reiterated its full support for the Syrian Arab Republic in restoring its sovereignty over the entire occupied Syrian Golan. It noted that UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981 provides a clear international reference regarding the legal status of the Golan Heights and affirms that actions taken by the occupying power to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration are null and void.
