Arab League chief urges Trump to act swiftly to save peace in Palestine and Gulf

Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the Arab League, has warned that "the situation in the region is heading toward a critical point and is approaching an explosive moment on multiple fronts, due to the ongoing deadlock and tensions surrounding the Palestinian issue on one hand, and the reckless escalation and brinkmanship characterizing the Gulf crisis on the other."

In an official statement posted on the Arab League's X platform page, Fahmy said, "All parties bear responsibility for maintaining security and stability in the region, and the US administration in particular is called upon to shoulder its responsibilities in this regard. President Trump took the initiative by launching the peace plan last October to end the war in Gaza, but nine months later, the second phase of the plan remains stalled. Meanwhile, two million Palestinians in Gaza continue to live in tattered tents, beset by disease and hunger, as Israeli government officials speak of long-term settlement and Israel expands its land holdings in the Strip."

On the eve of the anticipated meeting between President Trump and the Israeli prime minister, the Secretary-General called on the US president to rein in the Israeli government's extreme ambitions to derail the Sharm El-Sheikh peace initiative, halt its repeated violations in Jerusalem, and stop enabling settler groups to attack and kill unarmed Palestinians in the West Bank. He warned that the Israeli government is seeking to eliminate the Palestinian presence entirely through settlement expansion, continued forced displacement, and by crippling the Palestinian Authority's ability to provide essential services by withholding large sums of Palestinian resources.

Fahmy added that "President Trump played a key role in reaching the 20-point plan endorsed by the Arab League and the UN Security Council, aimed at rebuilding Gaza and paving the way for the realization of a Palestinian state." He stressed the importance of the US president confronting Israeli stalling tactics designed to empty the peace plan of substance, prolong the current situation in Gaza indefinitely, and implement de facto annexation in the West Bank.

Warning of the dangers facing the Middle East, and the Gulf region in particular, the Secretary-General called for a swift return to the understandings agreed between the United States and Iran and the resumption of negotiations to end the crisis, restore regional stability, respect the sovereignty and interests of neighboring states, and ensure safe passage through the Gulf and Bab Al-Mandab Strait.

Fahmy emphasized that "the latest escalation by Iran and the Houthis against Gulf Arab states and Jordan is strongly condemned," adding that immediate action is needed to end violations and attacks, starting with de-escalation, a return to diplomacy, and strict adherence to international law and legitimacy.
