Egyptian police seize largest cache of illegal weapons in Sohag

Egypt’s Interior Ministry has announced the successful thwarting of an attempt to distribute a large cache of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Sohag province, following a security operation that resulted in the death of a highly dangerous criminal and the arrest of his accomplice.

The ministry explained that investigations by the General Directorate for Drug Control and Unlicensed Weapons and Ammunition, in cooperation with relevant security agencies, tracked the movements of two criminals who were preparing to bring in a significant quantity of illegal weapons and ammunition for trafficking.

After completing the necessary legal procedures, security forces, with the participation of the Central Security Sector, carried out a mission targeting the suspects in Sohag. One suspect resisted arrest and was killed, while the other was apprehended.

The operation led to the seizure of 52 automatic rifles and more than 5,000 rounds of various calibers. The estimated value of the confiscated items is around 10 million Egyptian pounds.

The ministry noted that the deceased suspect had previous convictions and outstanding sentences in several cases, including drug trafficking, possession and trafficking of unlicensed firearms, and armed robbery.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that all necessary legal measures have been taken and that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
