China backs Gulf security, calls for free navigation amid regional tensions

China’s Vice President Han Zheng on Saturday reaffirmed his country’s support for the security of Gulf and Middle Eastern states, condemning attacks targeting the region and stressing the need to ensure freedom of navigation amid rising military tensions that threaten trade and energy supplies.

Speaking at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Han said China supports the security of Gulf countries and condemns attacks against them, while also emphasizing the importance of safeguarding global supply chain security.

China’s emphasis on maritime security and supply chains comes as the region faces threats to shipping, trade, and energy flows, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital energy and trade corridors.

Previous UN discussions have highlighted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have consequences beyond the Gulf, affecting global energy, food security, and supply chains.

Han also called for unified efforts to protect the United Nations, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing multiple crises.

On the Palestinian issue, the Chinese vice president reiterated Beijing’s support for a two-state solution and called for returning the Palestinian cause to what he described as its "rightful path."

His remarks come as the two-state solution has returned to the forefront of General Assembly discussions this year, with a high-level meeting held in New York on September 22 to address the issue.

The UN Secretary-General has also affirmed that a two-state solution, based on pre-1967 borders, remains the path to lasting peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is taking place in New York from September 22 to 28 under the theme "Restoring trust and managing transformation: United Nations delivering results for all," with broad participation from world leaders and representatives.
