China's Xi optimistic about 'great' future for US-China relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed optimism about the future of relations with the United States, stating that the understanding reached with US President Donald Trump represents a "unified vision for the future of our two countries" and that "the future of relations with America will be great."

Xi made his remarks during a tea reception held in the Red Room at the White House on Friday, at the conclusion of his state visit to Washington. He praised the visit and his discussions with Trump, saying, "Every detail of the visit to America was wonderful," and commended the warm welcome and arrangements.

The two leaders had held talks at the White House on Thursday, discussing bilateral relations, economic and trade issues, as well as a number of international topics. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi emphasized during the meeting the need to turn the agreed vision for relations into practical steps, making cooperation the main path, keeping competition within appropriate limits, and managing differences between the two countries.

During the state banquet hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in honor of Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan, Xi noted that the visit had resulted in new understandings, coming less than six months after Trump's visit to China.

At the tea reception, Trump said the agreements reached with China "will make American farmers happy," referring to the economic and trade understandings between Washington and Beijing, with agriculture as a key focus.

Agreements announced during Trump's visit to China last May included Beijing's commitment to purchase at least $17 billion annually in US agricultural products from 2026 to 2028, in addition to previous commitments related to soybeans.

Earlier understandings also covered rare earth metals and American aircraft, with both sides agreeing to build a "constructive and strategically stable" US-China relationship.

Trump and Melania Trump hosted Xi and his wife for tea before heading to the National Archives in Washington, where the two presidents and their spouses viewed documents and records related to the history of US-China relations, marking the final stop of Xi's visit.
