Direct flights resume between Damascus and Berlin after 14-year hiatus

Direct flights between Damascus and Berlin resumed on Saturday after a nearly 14-year suspension, with the arrival of the first Sundair flight from Berlin to Damascus International Airport, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The flight was attended by Mohammed Bara Shukri, chargé d'affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Berlin, marking the official return of direct air travel between the two capitals after years of interruption.

Omar Al-Hasri, President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, had previously announced that Damascus International Airport was preparing to receive the first direct Sundair flight from Berlin, as part of efforts to restore regular air links between Damascus and Germany.

In a post on his X account, Al-Hasri explained that the launch of the route is part of the authority's efforts to reconnect Syrian airports with European destinations and expand Syria's international air transport network.

He added that the resumption of flights aims to facilitate travel, especially for members of the Syrian community in Germany, as well as to support tourism, economic exchange, and communication between the two countries.
