King Charles praises Europe’s first eco-friendly mosque during Cambridge visit

King Charles III praised the design of Cambridge Central Mosque, Europe’s first eco-friendly mosque, during a visit on Monday, expressing admiration for the quality and care invested in its construction and highlighting its significant contribution to both the Muslim community and the city of Cambridge.

During his visit, King Charles toured Cambridge Central Mosque to learn about its environmental standards. He was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers on Mill Road before meeting prominent figures and worshippers inside the building.

The mosque’s eco-friendly features include high-efficiency heat pumps, solar panels, and a system for collecting excess water from wash basins and rainwater. The building also relies on large skylights to provide natural lighting throughout the year.

The king entered the prayer hall after removing his shoes, where he was presented with a book about the mosque, which can accommodate 1,000 worshippers. He also spoke with schoolchildren, joking that he hoped he hadn’t “spoiled the holiday too much by bringing you here.”

During the visit, King Charles unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the 75th anniversary of Cambridge being granted city status by his grandfather, King George VI, and described the visit as “a pleasure.”

Addressing those present, the king said: “I am deeply impressed by the quality of the design and all the care and attention that has gone into it. It makes a tremendous contribution, I am sure, not only to the Muslim community but to Cambridge itself.”

He added: “So I congratulate you and sincerely hope you continue to achieve every possible success and keep working with other faiths in this area to provide a wonderful example of integrated religious activity.”
