Pakistan resumes diplomacy with Tehran amid Chinese push, US and Iranian requests: columnist

Columnist Abdulrahman Hayat stated that Pakistan has once again returned to diplomatic engagement, this time encouraged by China and at the request of both the US and Iran.

Speaking on Al Arabiya FM, he added that Iran has a reputation for deception and evasiveness, while Pakistan approaches cooperation with Iran differently, being well aware of Iran’s messaging and not swayed by conflicting statements from senior officials in Tehran.

He continued that Iran has repeatedly reached out to Pakistan for help in returning to the diplomatic track and overcoming its ongoing crisis, but Pakistan has not responded directly. Instead, it has focused on strengthening regional alliances to bolster deterrence alongside countries supporting the peace process.

He went on to say that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to China last week, leveraging China’s influence and asking Beijing to persuade Pakistan once again to pursue mediation efforts.

He concluded by saying that the Iranian narrative is not credible and is often used for local manipulation, whereas Pakistan has always been honest and transparent in its statements regarding the mediation process.
