Yemen's presidential council chief rules out new truce with Houthis

Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi said his government does not support a new ceasefire with the Houthis that would repeat past experiences.

He added that the Yemeni state is now more capable, cohesive, and ready to protect its citizens, institutions, and sovereign interests, following years of efforts to unify political, military, security, and economic decision-making, rebuild state institutions, and shift regional and international approaches toward the Houthi militia.

Al-Alimi continued that the state’s strategy is clear in restoring its institutions and ending the coup, emphasizing that the timing and steps to achieve this goal are up to the leadership. He called on Yemenis to trust their state and institutions, stressing that the current stance is fundamentally different from previous phases, thanks to internal unity, a strong political and military front, growing popular support, and a significant regional and international shift in understanding the Houthi threat.

He stated that from now on, any action by the Houthi militia will be met with a comprehensive response and deterrence, affirming that the situation has changed. "We now have armed forces under a unified operations room, a supreme commander, and a high military committee. This force is ready to defend Yemenis, their facilities, and national institutions. Our strategic goal is to restore state institutions and end the coup," he said.

Al-Alimi added that the past ten years of experience with the Houthi militia have shown that any truce is merely a period for them to rebuild their military capabilities and return to war. He stressed that the government now fully understands that the Houthis are a project of war and destruction, not peace.
