US-Denmark security deal to boost Greenland and Arctic defense

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting the US "permanent control" over the island's security and preventing any military presence by US adversaries there.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform, "I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has reached an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, granting the United States permanent control over security and all other needs in Greenland."
He added, "From now on, no adversary of the United States will ever be able to establish a base in Greenland, have a military presence there, or make sensitive investments without our explicit written consent."
Greenland Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede welcomed the agreement, saying it "guarantees and enhances the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the Western alliance."
He added that the agreement "recognizes Greenland's interests and our position in international cooperation."
Since announcing his intention to prioritize Greenland strategically, Trump has repeatedly emphasized Washington's need to control Greenland for strategic reasons, raising concerns in Denmark and NATO.
Several media outlets have reported that the US seeks to open three new military bases in southern Greenland, in addition to its existing Pituffik Air Base in the north of the island.
