UN warns of worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan

The United Nations has warned that humanitarian conditions in Sudan are deteriorating due to ongoing fighting, displacement, worsening security, and a lack of funding.

UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that insecurity around El-Obeid in North Kordofan state continues to threaten civilians and force more people to flee. He noted that humanitarian aid is ongoing, including the provision of two million liters of drinking water to around 133,000 people.

In West Darfur, fighting has displaced about 18,000 people from more than 20 villages. Meanwhile, a funding crisis in Central Darfur has led to the closure of three health facilities, depriving around 75,000 displaced people of basic health services.

The United Nations renewed its call for all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access, stressing that only 41% of the $2.9 billion required for Sudan's humanitarian appeal has been funded.
