Russia seeks to prolong US-Iran conflict, may have aided Tehran: analyst

Russian affairs researcher Samer Elias has said that Russia is seeking to prolong the US conflict with Iran.

Speaking in an interview with Al Arabiya FM, Elias added that Russia does not want a complete collapse of Iran, and therefore it is possible that Moscow has provided assistance to the Iranian side.

He explained that Russia’s condition for offering such support was that it should not be discovered, as Moscow is hoping for closer ties with the US administration on the Ukraine issue, and does not want its relations with Gulf states—especially on economic matters—to be affected.

Elias also noted that Russia supports security in the Gulf region and encourages Arab-Iranian dialogue to establish a comprehensive system that serves all parties’ interests. However, he said, Russia’s vision has not materialized due to regional concerns over Iran’s ambitions.
