US to end Peshmerga aid agreement with Iraqi Kurdistan

The US Department of Defense has informed leaders in Iraq's Kurdistan region that the administration does not plan to renew the memorandum of understanding for providing security assistance to the Peshmerga forces, according to American sources cited by Al Hadath. The agreement is set to expire on September 30.

Sources said the aid agreement with the Peshmerga in Iraqi Kurdistan will end as scheduled, without extension. However, they noted that the end of the memorandum between Erbil and Washington does not mean an end to cooperation between the two sides.

According to the sources, any future US assistance to Iraq will be tied to specific achievements and missions, indicating a shift in the framework for support after the current agreement concludes.

Kurdistan region leaders were notified during recent meetings with US officials. The end of the memorandum coincides with the planned withdrawal of the last US and allied forces from Iraq on September 30.

The end of the agreement marks a new phase in security relations between the Peshmerga and Washington. The Peshmerga fought alongside coalition forces during the campaign against Daesh, which aimed to end the group's control over parts of Iraq and Syria.

With the scheduled withdrawal, the international military campaign against Daesh will officially conclude, according to available information. The only remaining US military base in Iraq, located in the Kurdish capital Erbil, is also set to close next month following the coalition's departure.
