Russian authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a minor suspected of planning a terrorist attack in Tsaritsyno Park, in southern Moscow, following security information received from the United States about a possible threat targeting the site.

According to the Interfax news agency, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said the arrest was made in response to intelligence provided by Washington through bilateral security cooperation channels, warning of a planned attack in the park.

The FSB did not disclose the suspect’s identity or age, nor did it provide details about the nature of the potential attack or whether others were involved in the planning.

US warning of possible mass casualties

The arrest followed a warning issued Saturday by the US Embassy in Moscow about what it described as credible information regarding a security threat that could result in mass casualties at the Tsaritsyno Museum and Reserve.

The embassy urged US citizens to avoid the area and stay away from large gatherings, noting that the US government was coordinating with Russian authorities to address the threat.

Similarly, the FSB announced Saturday that it had received information from the United States about preparations for a terrorist attack in the capital, confirming that necessary measures were being taken to address the threat.

Following the warning, Russian authorities temporarily closed the park and imposed entry restrictions, according to security sources cited by RIA Novosti.

Tsaritsyno Park is one of the most prominent historical and recreational destinations in southern Moscow, featuring palaces, museums, and expansive gardens that attract large numbers of visitors.

Security cooperation despite Moscow-Washington tensions

The incident highlights ongoing security information sharing between Russia and the United States in counterterrorism efforts, despite political and military tensions between the two countries.

In March 2024, the US Embassy in Moscow issued a warning about extremist plots targeting large gatherings in the Russian capital.

Days after that warning, the Crocus City Hall concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow was attacked by gunmen, resulting in the deaths of more than 140 people.

Subsequent US reports revealed that Washington had provided Moscow with information about a possible attack on the venue, while Russian intelligence at the time said the warnings were not specific enough to prevent the assault.

To date, Russian authorities have not reported any attack inside Tsaritsyno Park, nor have they announced the seizure of weapons or explosives during the arrest, as investigations with the suspect continue.
