Ukrainian president opens new front with Iran, says analyst

Ourag Ramadan, director of the Aurès Center for Strategic Studies in Kyiv, said that "Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky now treats Iran as an ally of Russia."

Speaking in an interview with Al Arabiya FM, Ramadan added that "the Ukrainian president wants to bring the Ukrainian issue back to the forefront, especially as the Middle East now dominates the international scene and global attention."

He continued, "By doing so, the Ukrainian president is opening a front with Iran, which has declared its right to respond to Ukraine's targeting of its ship in the Caspian Sea and to defend itself. This poses a risk for Ukraine, as the range of Iranian missiles could reach Ukrainian territory, especially after Iran warned that Ukraine would become a legitimate target."

Regarding the anticipated European response to the escalation initiated by the Ukrainian president, Ramadan said that "the cost of operations will increase, and Iran may use Ukraine's actions as a pretext to formalize its alliance with Russia."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced that Ukrainian forces had targeted a Russian warship and other vessels used to transport military shipments linked to Iran in the Caspian Sea.
