Kuwait summons Iranian ambassador over attack on Kuwaiti tanker in Hormuz

Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it had summoned the Iranian ambassador and handed him a protest note after a Kuwaiti tanker was targeted yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the ministry said that Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Meshaan summoned Mohammad Toutounji, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Kuwait, and delivered a protest note regarding Iran's targeting of the Kuwaiti tanker 'Kifan' on Monday evening as it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which resulted in injuries to several crew members.

The Deputy Foreign Minister stressed that this blatant attack comes amid escalating aggression by Iran against Kuwait since February 28, 2026, including provocative and inciting statements from the Iranian side. He said it constitutes a flagrant violation of Kuwait's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and interests, as well as a threat to international maritime security and freedom of navigation, and a breach of international law, the United Nations Charter, and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026.

Kuwait reiterated its demand for Iran to immediately halt its unlawful attacks, emphasizing that Kuwait reserves the right to take necessary measures and holds Iran fully responsible for this incident and its ongoing aggression against Kuwait.
