He urged the European Union to adopt the European Parliament's resolution calling for the designation of the Houthis, including their political and military wings, leaders, and security apparatus, as a terrorist organization. He called for the decision to be implemented at the EU level, using legal, economic, and diplomatic tools to halt the group's attacks.
This came during a phone call on Tuesday between Al-Alimi and European Council President Antonio Costa, during which Al-Alimi stressed that the Yemeni government relies on the Council to build consensus among member states for the designation. He said this would help stop Houthi attacks and ensure compliance with international legitimacy and the will of the Yemeni people.
Al-Alimi said Houthi practices include targeting civilians, airports, and vital infrastructure, recruiting children, besieging cities, attacking commercial vessels, and detaining UN and humanitarian workers, adding that peaceful options have been exhausted. He warned that continued attacks inside Yemen, across borders, and in international shipping lanes make delays costly, adding that European action could reduce resources funding these attacks and enhance civilian protection, regional security, and European interests.
The call also addressed the situation in Yemen, including the siege imposed by the group on Taiz, preventing access to water, fuel, and basic needs, as well as killings, abuse, arrests, searches, and forced displacement.
Al-Alimi affirmed the continuation of "Operation Dawn of Yemen," carried out by the state and its armed forces, including military formations and popular resistance, aiming to end the Houthi threat, restore state institutions, and reestablish government authority across all Yemeni territory.
