Earlier today, Yemeni government sources said that the Iran-aligned Houthi group reached the strategic Perim Island in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, potentially strengthening their control over one of the world's key maritime routes, according to Reuters.
The sources added that government forces withdrew from Perim Island, and that the Houthis also seized the coastal city of Dhubab on the Red Sea mainland opposite the island.
Yemeni government forces indicated they would attempt to retake areas captured by the Houthis during this week's surprise offensive along the Red Sea coast, stating they would deploy weapons and aircraft to counter any Houthi movements in strategic locations, including the road leading to the coastal city of Mokha, which the group seized yesterday, as well as the Hanish Islands in the Red Sea.
Colonel Majed Al-Nazili, military spokesperson for the Yemeni government forces, urged civilians to avoid using the road between Taiz and Mokha and to stay away from Houthi equipment.
