Israel launches new airstrikes on Gaza and Deir al-Balah

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continued for a second consecutive day on Sunday, killing at least four Palestinians, despite US President Donald Trump's announcement of significant progress toward implementing last year's Gaza ceasefire agreement.

Palestinian health officials in Gaza said Israeli warplanes carried out separate strikes on Gaza City and Deir al-Balah.

Paramedics said a man and his wife were killed and four others wounded in an airstrike on an apartment in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, while two more people, including a child, died in a strike on an apartment in Gaza City.

Trump said on Thursday that major progress had been made after the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas agreed to disarm as part of a US-backed initiative to implement the ceasefire reached last year in Egypt. On Friday, the peace council chaired by Trump published a 15-point roadmap outlining the final steps for the agreement's implementation.

The roadmap has not yet been implemented. Hamas has declared it will only hand over its weapons for storage after Israel halts its military operations and withdraws its forces in accordance with last year's agreement. An Israeli official told Reuters there would be no withdrawal from current military positions unless Hamas undertakes genuine disarmament.
