US sanctions on Iran trade unlikely to impact China, expert says
Hamza Al-Kaud of Business Monitor International says US sanctions on countries trading with Iran will not affect China due to its global economic influence.
Key Takeaways
AIHamza Al-Kaud, Deputy Director for the Middle East at Business Monitor International, a research firm, stated that US sanctions imposed on countries dealing with Iran will not impact China.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, he added that the sanctions hinted at by the US Treasury Department against countries trading with Iran would not affect Beijing, which is already subject to major sanctions and remains open to negotiations.
Al-Kaud continued that sanctions on Iran will not affect China, especially as Asian buyers hold significant influence in the global economy. Therefore, these sanctions will remain a bargaining tool at the negotiating table but will not have the same effect as a maritime blockade on Iran.
He further noted that China's continued purchase of Iranian oil is unlikely to anger US President Donald Trump, as his dealings with China focus on artificial intelligence, minerals, and several other issues. Additionally, the global economy depends on both China and the United States, so secondary sanctions on China over Iranian oil purchases will not affect the planned visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the US.
