Russia and Ukraine trade attacks as peace remains elusive

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has escalated into a cycle of mutual attacks, with no practical mechanism in sight to restore peace.

In recent hours, Russia announced that its forces targeted a cargo ship carrying military supplies in the Black Sea, a day after striking fuel tanks designated for Ukrainian forces. Russian forces also used precision-guided airborne weapons and attack drones to hit fuel storage facilities for the Ukrainian armed forces at the port of Odesa.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to target Russian sites with drone swarms. Ukrainian operations have struck the regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Rostov, Ryazan, Saratov, Tambov, Tula, Moscow, Crimea, Krasnodar, and waters of the Azov and Black Seas. Russia reported shooting down 635 Ukrainian drones in the western part of the country.

Russia is pursuing a strategy of "depleting stockpiles" in its operations against Ukraine, intensifying attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Ukraine, for its part, faces a notable shortage of air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

Ukraine has also attempted to strike critical Russian sites, with the Ukrainian military announcing strikes on an oil depot in Kaluga, as well as attacks on an oil refinery and an air base in Saratov.
