US Congress approves new sanctions targeting Putin and Russia's 'shadow fleet'

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a wide-ranging new package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

The Republican-controlled House passed the measure by a vote of 262 to 159.

The legislation targets Russia's energy and defense sectors, President Vladimir Putin and other officials, as well as the so-called "shadow fleet" Moscow uses to evade Western sanctions.

Former President Donald Trump previously stated he would sign the bill into law, after it was passed by the Senate last month by a vote of 86 to 11.
