Oil tanker hit by unknown projectile off Oman, engine room damaged

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency announced on Monday that an oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman, causing damage and leaving the vessel disabled in territorial waters.

In a notice, the agency said the tanker was hit about nine nautical miles northeast of the Shinas area. The projectile damaged the engine room and rendered the ship inoperative.

The agency confirmed that the crew members are safe, but the extent of any potential environmental impact from the incident remains unclear.

UKMTO did not specify the source of the projectile or identify any party responsible for targeting the tanker. Maritime authorities continue to monitor shipping activity in the area, as risks to vessels and oil tankers persist.
