Iran executes two men over anti-government protests

Iran’s judiciary announced the execution by hanging of two men on charges related to anti-government protests, with media reports stating the executions were carried out in a public square.

According to the judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency, "the death sentences for Abolfazl Sabahi and Amir-Hossein Safari were carried out this morning."

The Iranian Mehr News Agency reported that the executions took place in the presence of several people in a square in the city of Malekshahr, Isfahan province, central Iran.

The agency said the two men were convicted of "attacking police officers with machetes and knives, tying them to traffic poles, dragging them on the ground, pouring gasoline on them, and setting them on fire" on January 8.

Other charges included "waging war against the state" by "carrying weapons and spreading fear and terror," as well as "corruption on earth" through "actions that severely disrupted public order and security in the country."
