Iranian parliament speaker rejects US claim of 130m barrels through Hormuz

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has dismissed as "false" a statement by US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant that 130 million barrels of oil were shipped through the Strait of Hormuz in the past 14 days.

Besant had said that the United States transported 130 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz over the last two weeks, while Iran did not export any barrels. He added that the maritime blockade and what he called "economic exclusion" would devastate Iran's economy.

Writing on X, Ghalibaf responded: "Ask another official about the losses suffered by Jane Street, which exceeded $130 million from short-selling oil futures contracts on your behalf in just one round."

In a related context, Ghalibaf said that external powers such as the United States are "incapable" of providing lasting security for regional countries, arguing that agreements and cooperation among regional states signal the beginning of a new era.

The Iranian parliament speaker added that recent regional developments have shown Islamic countries that foreign powers like the United States cannot deliver lasting security for all, according to his remarks.
