CBS: Iranian strikes on Jordan damaged US military aircraft

CBS has reported that several US military aircraft sustained damage following strikes that targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan overnight.

The network cited its correspondent Jennifer Jacobs, who stated on X that an American A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft was hit and lost one of its wings, while about eight F-15 fighter jets suffered minor damage. All the affected aircraft have since returned to service.

Jordanian authorities announced yesterday that 20 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran toward Jordanian territory. Air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 18 of them, while two missiles landed in unpopulated areas, with no casualties reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had targeted a US base in the Azraq area of Jordan with ballistic missiles, in retaliation for US attacks on Iranian oil tankers.

Iranian media reported that the attack targeted hangars used for the maintenance, preparation, and deployment of US F-35, F-16, and F-15 fighter jets.

The attack comes amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. The US Central Command recently stated that its forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers on September 8, and that a US warship had avoided two ballistic missile attacks by the Revolutionary Guard over two days, with no American personnel injured.

On Tuesday evening, the Revolutionary Guard threatened to target ships in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports hosting US forces or personnel, and urged the crews of oil tankers near those ports to evacuate their vessels, in response to the targeting of Iranian oil tankers.
