Canada imposes sanctions on five Iranian officials over Strait of Hormuz navigation threats

Canada has announced additional sanctions on five Iranian individuals, citing their military, legal, and media activities that undermine international peace, security, and stability, particularly those related to obstructing navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said in a statement on Friday that the sanctions are imposed under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations and target senior officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The Canadian government explained that the measures target activities it says have threatened a vital international waterway and obstructed navigation rights in and around the Strait of Hormuz, describing these actions as violations of international law that undermine global peace and security.

Ottawa stressed that the sanctions align with efforts by its allies and partners to counter what it describes as Iran’s destabilizing activities and Tehran’s influence in the Middle East and beyond, adding that these measures represent a clear stance against violations of international navigation rights.

Anand emphasized that Canada will continue working with allies and partners to support diplomatic efforts aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in accordance with international law, and expressed Canada’s readiness to support efforts to stabilize the Strait of Hormuz when conditions permit.

The Canadian move comes amid ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and a decline in maritime traffic, as escalation between Iran and the United States continues to affect oil and shipping movements through the strategic waterway.
