Yemeni presidential council member, Russian FM discuss Houthi escalation and Yemen developments

Abdullah Al-Alimi, member of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, met today in New York with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting addressed the historic ties between the two countries and ways to strengthen them, as well as the latest developments in Yemen and the region.

According to an official statement, Al-Alimi reviewed the latest political, security, and military developments in Yemen, particularly the recent escalation by Houthi militias on the western coast and several battlefronts. He highlighted the resulting humanitarian consequences and damage to civilian infrastructure, as well as the serious implications for regional security and stability, and the threat to international navigation in the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab.

The Yemeni council member stressed that the state's duty to protect its citizens, territory, and sovereignty, and to confront armed threats, falls within its constitutional responsibilities and legitimate rights under international law. He emphasized that strengthening state institutions and ensuring exclusive control over arms and sovereign decisions are fundamental to Yemen's security and stability.

For his part, the Russian foreign minister reiterated his country's support for the Yemeni government, Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and for United Nations efforts to reach a political settlement to the crisis in Yemen. He underscored the importance of continued consultation and coordination between the two countries on issues of mutual interest and of further strengthening bilateral relations.
