Iraq summons Iranian ambassador over regional map posts

Iraq's Foreign Ministry has summoned the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al Sadeq, to seek clarification over the publication of posts related to regional maps by several Iranian diplomatic missions abroad, as well as the accompanying positions and comments.

In a statement cited by Al Arabiya, the ministry explained that the summons was prompted by what it considered comments and stances that do not reflect the depth of the relationship between Iraq and Iran, especially in light of their bilateral ties.

The ministry stressed the importance of addressing issues affecting bilateral relations in a manner consistent with the nature and depth of those ties, and of maintaining channels of communication and understanding between Baghdad and Tehran. While the statement did not specify the content of the maps in question, it emphasized the need to resolve disputes through diplomatic channels.

For his part, the Iranian ambassador affirmed his country’s readiness to continue cooperation and coordination with Iraq across various fields, highlighting the deep historical and social ties between the two nations and the importance of ongoing dialogue on matters of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the Iraqi side stressed the need to avoid any positions or comments that could harm the nature of bilateral relations, stating that such posts affect the sovereignty and geographic and historical identity of Iraq and other countries in the region.
