Trump announces final US troop withdrawal from Iraq, praises new prime minister

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the last American troops are leaving Iraq today, describing the move as a "great day for America" and marking the end of a military presence that lasted in various forms for more than two decades.

In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said: "I am pleased to announce today that the last American forces are leaving Iraq," adding that the United States is ending a long chapter that, in his words, began with decisions that led it into a "quagmire."

Trump praised Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, calling him a "wonderful new prime minister." He said he has supported Al-Zaidi from the beginning and noted his victory in the elections.

Trump concluded by saying: "This is a great moment for America," considering the troop withdrawal a victory for both Iraq and the fight against Daesh (ISIS).
