UN warns of cholera outbreak and aid funding shortfall in Sudan

The United Nations has warned of the continued spread of cholera and a lack of funding for humanitarian operations in Sudan, as conflict and population displacement persist.

The International Organization for Migration reported that around 730 people have been displaced from several villages in South Kordofan. The World Health Organization announced that more than 2,600 cholera cases had been recorded across several states as of early August, noting that the Kordofan region is at the center of the latest outbreak.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the organization and its partners are intensifying efforts in treatment, vaccination, distribution of medical supplies, and provision of clean water. He highlighted that a rehabilitated water network, supported by UNICEF in Abu Jubayhah, now provides safe water to about 25,000 people daily, including 5,000 displaced individuals.

He added that humanitarian agencies delivered some form of assistance to 12.3 million people in Sudan between January and July 2026, but only 2.2 million received multi-sectoral support due to funding shortages.

Dujarric noted that Sudan's humanitarian response plan has received only $1.2 billion, or 41% of its estimated $2.9 billion requirement. He called for increased funding, protection of civilians and health and humanitarian workers, and safe, unimpeded access for aid deliveries.
