China urges US and Iran to show restraint, reopen Strait of Hormuz

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing urges both Iran and the United States to act with wisdom and restraint, return to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, and "engage in substantive consultations on issues of mutual concern," according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry.

During his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday, Wang Yi added, "We urge all parties to take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible."

The Chinese minister stressed that his country's policy toward Iran "remains consistent and firm, and China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Iran," while noting that continued hostilities are not in the interests of either side or the international community.

Wang Yi also emphasized that China "does not wish to see regional tensions further extend to Yemen and the Red Sea." He added: "We support dialogue based on mutual respect for sovereignty and security between Iran and Gulf states."
