Trump renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' amid Canada tensions

US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America', stating that the decision would take effect immediately.

The executive order directs the US Department of the Interior and its Secretary, Doug Burgum, to implement the name change, according to a White House aide.

Lake Ontario lies on the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York, and is one of the five Great Lakes of North America.

The decision comes at a time of rising trade tensions between the United States and Canada, following the collapse of trade talks between the two countries last week.

The negotiations lasted three days as part of intensive discussions, but ended without an agreement, with both sides trading blame for the failure.
