Muslim World League launches community peace initiative in West Africa

The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and President of the Association of Muslim Scholars, Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, has launched the League’s community peace initiative for West Africa. The announcement was made during an international conference titled "Diversity and Community Peace: Partnership for a Promising Future," held in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.

The conference was held under the patronage of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and brought together Islamic and Christian religious leaders, as well as several ministers, parliamentarians, and civil society leaders from across the region.

The event concluded with the adoption of the "Abuja Declaration," which was unanimously agreed upon by religious leaders representing various faiths and denominations in West Africa. The declaration includes a joint action plan between government institutions, solidarity among Islamic and Christian leaders, and the involvement of civil society organizations.

Joint action plan and coordinating body

The declaration calls for expanding scientific, training, and media programs related to the "Makkah Charter" to address challenges to peace, coexistence, and community stability. It also emphasizes strengthening partnerships in conflict prevention and protecting the multi-religious and multi-ethnic fabric of national societies.

Additionally, a coordinating body for religious and civil institutions in West Africa was announced to oversee the implementation of the action plan and coordinate related programs and initiatives. This aims to ensure effective execution, achievement of objectives, and regular assessment of results.

Addressing intellectual and social roots

The initiative is based on addressing the root causes of intellectual and social problems, particularly extremist ideologies. It ensures commitment, partnership, and sustainability through binding agreements among all relevant parties.
