Student opens fire at Thai school, killing teacher and wounding others

At least one teacher was killed and several others wounded after a student opened fire at a school in Thailand on Friday, according to authorities cited by Reuters.

Initial reports indicated two people were killed and 15 others injured, including one in critical condition, according to the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, one of Thailand’s leading rescue organizations.

The foundation said in a statement: "Officers are urgently evacuating students from the area."

The shooting took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, a well-known secondary school with around 3,000 students, located on a busy highway in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok.

Lieutenant Colonel Dechabree Kongdee, chief of Nonthaburi police, said the suspected shooter took his own life, according to Reuters. Police confirmed the attacker was a student at the school.

Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau told CNN that "the situation is now under control."

According to Reuters, the wounded included one teacher and three students.

Emergency workers were seen near an ambulance outside the school as rescue teams attended to the injured.

A video verified by CNN showed students fleeing the school while a staff member assisted with the evacuation.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene carrying stretchers. A Reuters photo showed a person lying on a stretcher outside an ambulance while a medic attended to another individual.

Gun ownership in Thailand is relatively high compared to other Southeast Asian countries.

There were more than 10.3 million civilian-owned firearms in Thailand, or about 15 guns per 100 people, according to 2017 data from the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey (SAS).

Thailand ranks second in Southeast Asia for firearm-related homicides, after the Philippines, according to 2019 data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s (IHME) Global Burden of Disease database at the University of Washington.

In February, a teacher was killed and a student wounded in Hat Yai, southern Thailand, after a gunman opened fire inside a school.

In 2022, 36 people, including 24 children, were killed in a massacre at a childcare center in northeastern Thailand, believed to be the deadliest incident of its kind in the country’s history.
