White House bars CNN, MSNBC, Politico reporters after Trump order

The White House on Saturday denied entry to representatives from three major media outlets—CNN, MSNBC, and Politico—in accordance with President Donald Trump's announcement that he would bar them from access.

According to Reuters, the three organizations said in separate statements that their press credentials were confiscated on Saturday morning when their journalists arrived at the White House.

Reuters noted that the outlets may challenge the ban on the grounds that it violates the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.

CNN described the ban as an "unlawful attack" on its constitutional right to report the news without government interference.

In separate statements, MSNBC and Politico said they would defend their rights under the First Amendment. MSNBC stated it intends to "take all necessary steps to defend its rights under the First Amendment and the essential role of an independent press in our democracy."

CNN and MSNBC announced they would continue to cover the Trump administration, while Politico affirmed its support for its White House correspondents.

Trump had accused the outlets on Friday of "spreading fake news," saying, "They should not be allowed to write or broadcast fabricated stories and lies repeatedly when covering the President of the United States." He added that other media outlets spreading fake news would follow.
