Egypt launches probe into Damietta drone attack, Sisi urges international action

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said on Thursday that relevant authorities are conducting investigations to determine the details and circumstances of the incident involving two ships at Damietta Port following a drone attack. He highlighted the dangers of escalating tensions in the region and stressed the need for Egypt, Spain, Europe, and the international community to work together to stop this escalation.

El-Sisi made these remarks during a phone call with Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain.

Mohamed El-Shenawy, spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency, stated that the Spanish prime minister began the call by condemning the Damietta Port incident and expressing Spain’s solidarity with Egypt during this time, both at the government and public levels.

The spokesperson added that the call also addressed regional developments, with President El-Sisi outlining Egypt’s efforts to restore stability in the area.

The Spanish prime minister expressed his deep appreciation for these efforts, and both sides emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution to maintain peace and security in the Middle East.

In this context, the Spanish prime minister stressed the need for the United Nations to play its role in ending the ongoing war, and reaffirmed the importance of reaching a just solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.

During the call, President El-Sisi also expressed Egypt’s full solidarity with Spain over the recent wildfires in several Spanish regions, offering his condolences to the victims and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. He affirmed Egypt’s readiness to provide all possible support to help Spain face these challenges, expressing confidence in Spain’s ability to overcome them and wishing the country continued prosperity. Additionally, El-Sisi congratulated the Spanish prime minister on the Spanish team winning the World Cup in football.

The spokesperson noted that the Spanish prime minister expressed his deep appreciation for President El-Sisi’s initiative to call and convey Egypt’s support during this critical time for Spain. He also emphasized the strong historical ties between Egypt and Spain at both official and popular levels, and expressed his hope to continue strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in various political and economic fields.
