Iraqi prime minister: Sinjar Mountain to come under full government control

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi has announced that Sinjar Mountain will come under the full authority of the federal government and its security and administrative institutions, coinciding with the start of Sinjar resistance factions handing over their weapons to the state.

During a meeting with the leadership of the Yazidi Cause Alliance, its parliamentary bloc head Murad Ismail, and the Sinjar Resistance Units, Al-Zaidi said that consolidating all weapons under state control and unifying security decisions are essential to protecting the people of Sinjar district, ensuring its stability, and safeguarding its future.

The prime minister stressed that the disarmament process is part of building state institutions and ending the existence of multiple security authorities. He noted that the state will guarantee the rights of members of the Sinjar Resistance Units and the Women's Units, recognizing their sacrifices by regulating their status and integrating qualified members into Iraqi security institutions in accordance with legal and official frameworks.

Al-Zaidi emphasized that the government will not allow Sinjar to become a battleground for conflicts, nor will it accept any security or military authority outside the state framework. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the Yazidi community, guaranteeing their rights, and addressing the consequences of crimes and injustices they suffered at the hands of terrorist groups.

Support for Yazidis and return of displaced persons

The prime minister directed that Yazidi citizens be included in the one-million housing plot initiative and called for creating the necessary conditions for the full return of displaced people to their areas. He also emphasized following up on the reconstruction of Sinjar district and providing essential services to help stabilize the population and strengthen social and economic stability.

Al-Zaidi affirmed that Yazidis are an integral and important component of Iraqi society, and that diversity is a source of national and human strength and wealth. He reiterated the government's commitment to addressing the aftermath of years of terrorism and displacement.

High committee to review Sinjar situation

The prime minister ordered the formation of a high-level committee to prepare a comprehensive study on the security and service conditions in Sinjar, identify the district's needs and the requirements of its residents, and propose appropriate solutions.

He also tasked the committee with overseeing the integration of Sinjar security personnel into official security and service institutions and regularizing their legal status to strengthen state authority and support stability in the district.

The meeting also discussed Sinjar's needs for infrastructure and reconstruction projects, compensation for those affected, preparations for the return of displaced persons, as well as issues related to the administration of the district, its government departments, and the management of the Sinjar Reconstruction Fund.

At the conclusion of the meeting, delegation members expressed their support for the prime minister's initiatives, particularly those related to strengthening state authority, disarmament, and integrating Sinjar Resistance Units into official institutions, as well as combating corruption, implementing economic reforms, and enhancing Iraq's foreign relations.
