A Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Monday showed US President Donald Trump's approval rating has fallen to its lowest level ever, as Americans express concern over rising gasoline prices and appear poised to punish the Republican Party in the upcoming congressional elections on November 3.

The four-day survey found that about 31 percent of Americans approve of Trump's performance in office, down one percentage point from the previous two weeks and marking the lowest level of his presidency.

When asked which party they would vote for if congressional elections were held today, around 47 percent of respondents chose the Democratic Party, compared to 35 percent who favored the Republican Party.

The Democrats' 12-point lead is the largest seen in the current election cycle and could boost their hopes of regaining control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

For Republicans, losing control of either chamber could complicate Trump's agenda during the final two years of his term.

The poll was conducted online and surveyed 1,679 American adults, including 1,279 registered voters. The margin of error was two percentage points for all participants and three points for registered voters.
