Syrian prosecutor to seek Interpol help in arrest of Assad, brother after death sentences

Syria’s Prosecutor General, Judge Hassan Al-Turba, described the issuance of death sentences against Bashar Assad and his brother Maher Assad as a “historic day for justice,” affirming that trials of former regime figures will continue and that the country is still at the beginning of its path toward justice.

In remarks to Al Arabiya, Al-Turba said the death sentences for Assad and his brother had passed through all legal procedures, noting that Syrian authorities will coordinate with Interpol to implement the arrest and extradition orders.

The prosecutor general stressed that authorities are serious about pursuing all those who committed crimes against the Syrian people, explaining that thousands of names are currently on trial and that the prosecution of former regime figures has not been selective.

Al-Turba emphasized that anyone who committed crimes against the Syrian people will be punished, stating that the criminal law is sufficient to prosecute former regime officials.

He added that amendments to the penal code will cover war crimes, as part of the ongoing process of trials related to crimes of the previous regime.
