Syrian foreign ministry official: stance on Iran shaped by 14 years of conflict

Mohammed Al-Jafal, adviser at Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the country’s position on Iranian policy stems from more than 14 years of war and destruction, noting that this period directly impacted the Syrian people.

Al-Jafal explained that any future relationship with Iran requires Tehran to respect Syria’s sovereignty and the will of its people, as well as to reconsider its previous policies, which were marked by interference in Syrian affairs.

The Syrian official added that Iran’s support for the Assad government in recent years has significantly influenced the course of the Syrian crisis, stressing that Damascus expects real changes in Iran’s approach if Tehran seeks a new relationship with Syria.

Al-Jafal also emphasized that respect for Syrian sovereignty is fundamental to any future cooperation or partnership, calling on Iran to reassess its previous positions regarding the Syrian crisis.
